The Institute of Leadership and Management UCU implements an innovative program of decision making under uncertainty. Griff Griffiths, the independent expert on Human System Dynamics Institute, London was invited to come to Lviv for this purpose. For two days 20 executives and managers were getting the understanding of the Complexity theory during the educational program ‘How to make decisions under permanent uncertainty’. The students of ILM UCU also had the opportunity to hear about the new approach from the Human Systems Dynamics (HSD) at the expert’s lecture.
The Human Systems Dynamics (HSD) is based on the Complexity theory which studies the unstable, uncertain, complicated and ambiguous world. HSD provides tools for decisions and actions in such world. The basic units in HSD are patterns which are created as result of interaction between people, circumstances, ideas. HSD knowledge helps to see these patterns and influence them. That is why the program about complexity theory is so relevant in the contemporary changeable world of complicated patterns. The complexity theory is important and relevant for Ukraine being in a state of permanent changes and attempts to find its position, both inside itself and outside, in the new international situation.
‘Our country has to make a leap in its development to catch up with the developed countries. And it needs certain tools to do it. Such leap is possible if we design and do something which has never been done before. Researchers show that Ukrainians are one of the nations in the world with the highest percentage of uncertainty avoidance. We don’t know what to do with uncertainty. This is to be learned yet because the world becomes ever more uncertain. This knowledge is especially important for reforms making because reforms are the transition from the old ways to the new ones. There is no prescribed method how to do it, it has yet to be found. The HSD approach and the complexity theory challenge our strong belief that future is predictable’, - says Vitaliy Rudenky, Coordinator of Management Development Programs at ILM UCU.
According to Vadym Miskyi, Head of the Advocacy Department of the Reanimation Package of Reforms, - reforms always mean uncertainty and never-ending process. It makes many people disappoint because they do not believe that perfection can be reached. Improvement is one of the basic notions of the theory which we have been studying. However, in this uncertain impossibility to reach a state of perfection it is always possible to make small clear and understandable improvements. For instance, though we definitely cannot change the entire media market in the country, we can still create a Public broadcasting the quality of which will be better than the rest of the media market. As the time passes, it will have an effect on the entire media space in the state. The same is true about the creation of the Supreme Court. If it’s impossible to replace all the judges at once, even a small number of good judges in the new Supreme Court is much better’, - says Vadym Miskyi.
This visit was the first attempt of the coach himself to adapt the complexity theory to the environment in Ukraine. Griff was impressed by the great interest of the audience and challenging questions from the participants. ‘One of the participants told me during the lecture: ‘I know, it’s the pattern of patterns’. This is the most abstract theory among the theories of changes. It has its drawbacks because it doesn’t offer immediate decisions. But it has got advantages too, since it can be applied in many areas as well as for new challenges. However, it requires some work to adapt this theory to Ukrainian context. But it won’t be long before you can get useful results from it’, - says the expert.
The organizers intend to develop the complexity theory in Ukraine, and strongly believe in its efficiency and relevance.
